Mature trees are one of the most precious parts of the Close considering the decades it takes to ever replace them. The Salisbury Close Preservation Society is represented on the Close Landscapes Committee, which monitors the environment of the Close and the work of the tree surgeons.

Of particular concern at present are the seven Horse Chestnuts north and south of the west front of the Cathedral. As the photographs show, these are important mature trees in the churchyard, where so many trees have been lost to disease and strong winds. The Horse Chestnuts may be infected with phythora (bleeding canker) disease, which is not necessarily fatal, may reverse and can be dealt with by removing die back. It has been suggested that the trees must be cut down in the near future. This despite the non fatal nature of phytothora infections of Horse Chestnuts.

The SCCPS strongly believes that all efforts must be made to preserve these chestnut trees. We have therefore offered to pay for advice from an expert arboriculturalist to establish whether such drastic action is really necessary
