Introduction

Heather Sebire is currently a Senior Historic Property Curator at English Heritage working with multi-period sites in the west of England including Stonehenge and Avebury. Heather was curator to the Stonehenge Environmental Improvements Project from 2010 to 2016, a £27 million project to build the new Visitor Centre and make landscape improvements at Stonehenge involving considerable partnership liaison.

 Formerly States Archaeologist on Guernsey in the Channel Islands, Heather curated the archaeology collections at Guernsey Museum for over ten years, alongside directing rescue excavations, organising research excavations and managing the island’s maritime archaeology. Heather is currently Honorary Secretary and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and a former Council Member of the Prehistoric Society and the Royal Archaeological Institute. Current personal research interests include the legibility and life history of monuments, particularly addressing how monuments are presented to the public. She has published widely in books and journals on many aspects of archaeology and heritage management.

The recent Stonehenge Environmental Improvements Project has gone a long way to improving the experience for visitors and Dr Heather Sebire’s talk describes how the iconic site of Stonehenge has been transformed since 2013 when the new visitor centre opened and the improvements made to the landscape following the closure of the A344.
